Most people know Mt. Fuji for its massive height and beautiful snow-capped shape. However, this mountain holds another national record. The wind on Mt. Fuji is officially the strongest in Japan!
In 1966, a massive typhoon approached Japan. During this storm, the weather station at the summit recorded a wind speed of 91 meters per second. This remains the highest wind speed ever recorded in Japanese history.
To understand this power, consider normal wind damage. For example, a wind speed of 50 meters per second can destroy wooden houses. A speed of 60 meters per second can blow cars away. Therefore, 91 meters per second is an unimaginably extreme force!
Such extreme typhoons are very rare. However, the average annual wind speed at the summit is still 12 meters per second. When wind exceeds 10 meters per second, walking forward becomes difficult. Consequently, Mt. Fuji remains a very windy environment all year round.
Fortunately, the wind weakens during the official climbing season from July to September. This allows travelers to visit the mountain safely in summer.

Interestingly, this strong wind is the secret reason behind the mountain’s beautiful views. Strong western winds constantly blow above 1,500 meters. However, the air below this altitude remains calm.
As a result, water vapor and dust gather in the lower areas. This trapped moisture creates the famous “Sea of Clouds” (Unkai) that you can see from above early in the morning. In addition, the constant high-altitude wind sweeps away dust. Therefore, the air stays incredibly clear, creating a deep blue sky and a stunning starry night.
