Full 1-Day Mt. Fuji & Hakone Bus Tour Itinerary: What to Expect from Tokyo
Are you planning a trip to see Mt. Fuji and Hakone but wondering how much you can actually fit into a single day? To give you a clear picture, I recently joined our standard Japan Gray Line (JGL) bus tour and took detailed notes of the exact timeline!
From the early morning departure in Tokyo to tasting the hot spring black eggs and riding the Shinkansen back, here is the ultimate, realistic 1-day itinerary for your upcoming adventure.
1. Morning: Departure from Tokyo & Heading into the Foothills
09:00 AM – Departure from Shinjuku: After picking up guests from various hotels around Tokyo, our bus heads straight toward Mt. Fuji. The total driving time is about 2.5 hours.
On the Bus – Culture & Stories: The ride flies by as our professional guide shares fascinating insights into Japanese culture, daily customs, and local history.
10:00 AM – Service Area Break (20 mins): A quick stop to stretch your legs, use the restroom, and check out unique Japanese snacks and souvenirs.
✨ Guide’s Memorable Quote: Shortly after the break, our guide shared a beautiful thought: “Mt. Fuji is Japan’s superstar. Sometimes she shows herself, and sometimes she stays hidden behind the clouds. Keep wishing from your heart, and your wishes will surely reach her!” Right at that moment, Mt. Fuji suddenly appeared out of the window!
2. Midday: Exploring Mt. Fuji 5th Station & Bonding on Board
10:45 AM – Entering Subaru Line: The bus begins climbing the mountain road. The guide shares the best photo spots and recommendation tips for souvenirs.
11:20 AM – Arrival at Mt. Fuji 5th Station: We spent 40 minutes exploring the local shops, beautiful shrines, and observation decks. The guide walked with us to explain the highlights, though everyone was free to explore at their own pace.
12:00 PM – Departing for Lunch: By this time, something wonderful happened—guests from different groups who were complete strangers in the morning started chatting and laughing together!
🍬 Fun Onboard Experiences: On our way to lunch, the guide passed around Japanese candy and hosted a hands-on origami workshop, keeping everyone entertained until we arrived at 01:00 PM for a delicious lunch and more souvenir shopping.
3. Afternoon: Gotemba Peace Park, Hakone Ropeway & Lake Ashi Cruise
02:05 PM – Gotemba Peace Park (Heiwa Koen): Arrived after a short drive. While it was surrounded by gorgeous fresh greenery on our visit, the guide mentioned that the entire park bursts into beautiful pink cherry blossoms during spring!
03:00 PM – Sounzan Station to Hakone Ropeway: We boarded the panoramic ropeway, arriving at the dramatic volcanic valley of Owakudani at 03:15 PM to see the sulfur vents and enjoy the famous hot-spring black eggs.
04:25 PM – Lake Ashi Pirate Ship Cruise: After heading down to the lake, we boarded a magnificent pirate ship for a refreshing cruise across the scenic waters, docking at Hakone-machi Port at 05:05 PM.
4. Evening: Bullet Train (Shinkansen) Experience Back to Tokyo
05:45 PM – Arrival at Odawara Station: To make sure everyone got home safely, our guide sat down with each person individually to explain exactly how to navigate from Tokyo Station back to their specific hotels.
06:14 PM – Bullet Train Departure: We boarded the Shinkansen and enjoyed a lightning-fast, smooth ride back.
06:48 PM – Arrival at Tokyo Station: The tour officially concludes here. Everyone left with tired legs but big smiles and a lifetime of memories!
