At the end of the day, our guides hand out beautiful, traditional “Omamori” style business cards. But what exactly is an Omamori, and why do we love sharing them with our guests?
In Japan, an Omamori (お守り) is a traditional protective amulet or lucky charm. Typically made of colorful brocade fabric and containing a sacred prayer, they are purchased at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples across the country.
The word comes from mamoru (守る), which means “to protect” or “to guide.” Each charm is dedicated to a specific wish: safe travel, good health, success, or general protection. By carrying one with you, it is believed that you will be shielded from misfortune and blessed with safe journeys wherever you go.
So, why do JGL guides carry their own custom Omamori-style cards? It all comes down to the spirit of Omotenashi—the Japanese philosophy of selfless hospitality.
Our guides do not view themselves as just commentators on a bus. They are your hosts, your local friends, and your guardians during your time in Japan. By handing you an Omamori-style card featuring their portrait, they are expressing a sincere, traditional wish: “May the rest of your travels in Japan be completely safe, happy, and filled with wonderful memories.”
